BRIDE OF CHRIST VERSES IN SCRIPTURE
John 14:1-3 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.”
In the previous verses, Jesus spoke as a rabbi to his disciples but more than that, in that a betrothed Hebrew man would go to prepare a place for his bride and only when his father would decide it was good to him, he would then order the wedding started. Only the father of the groom had the decision and say.
Matthew 24:36 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
The Lord used a parable to show that in order to become His wife, we the bride (His church) must be faithful and ready at all times. And that the unfaithful will not make it to the Marriage Banquet.
Matthew 25:13 “But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”
When some thought that John the Baptist was the long awaited Messiah, John responded in the following manner to them.
John 3:27-29 John replied, “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but am sent ahead of Him.’ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens for him, and is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
The following verses in Mark, tell of Jesus speaking of Himself as the bridegroom when he was questioned about why His disciples were not seen fasting.
Mark 2:19-20 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were often fasting. So people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t Your disciples fast like John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees?” Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? As long as He is with them, they cannot fast. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.”
Paul in his letter to the believers at Corinth wrote:
2 Corinthians 11:2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
In a letter to the Ephesians, Paul was exhorting husbands in how to treat their wives as Jesus has loved His church.
Ephesians 5:25-29 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Indeed, no one ever hated his own body, but he nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.…
What a wonderful joy awaits the people of God, as we can see the future revealed by John, when the bride of Christ arrives for the Marriage of the Lamb.
Revelation 19:6-8 And I heard a sound like the roar of a great multitude, like the rushing of many waters, and like a mighty rumbling of thunder, crying out: “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him the glory. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure.” For the fine linen she wears is the righteous acts of the saints.
Immediately following the Marriage Banquet, we see the following.
Revelation 19:14 The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and pure, follow Him on white horses.
It is the bride following her husband, heading to earth for His 1000 year reign. They are still in the white, pure fine line as the bride had at the banquet.
Revelation 21:9-10 Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls full of the seven final plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God,”
Consider this before the following verses are read. When the earth and its heavens are destroyed, where would the people of God be? Safe in their heavenly eternal home. Only now, in the home that Jesus prepared to be their home with Him.
Revelation 21:1-3 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, a for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.”
Cities and the people of the cities are often used interchangeably. States also. How did your state vote in a federal election? It is the people who voted, not the buildings. The holy city is the home of God’s people. The physical structure is not the bride, but their abode. If it sounds strange saying this, so be it. There are actually some people that believe the physical, holy city is the bride …
In Hebrew marital customs, historically there have been two cups of wine as intrinsic parts of the marriage covenant. The first cup of wine is drunk upon the agreement of the betrothal/engagement, when the father of the groom would choose the bride and the offer was accepted by the father of the bride and the bride. This is the first part of the wedding covenant (the ketubah). And a second cup is called the simcha. This second cup of wine is shared during the marriage ceremony with the bride drinking after the groom, thus making the covenant complete. This is referred to by the Lord when He first initiated Communion.
Matthew 26:29 "I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
We are members of Christ’s (glorified) body, being (formed out of) His flesh and of His bones." Adam's deep sleep wherein Eve was formed out of His opened side, symbolizes Christ's death which was the birth of the spouse, the church (John 12:24; 19:34-35). As Adam gave Eve a new name, 'ishah,’ "woman" or "wife" which is the counterpart of 'iysh,’ "man" or "husband," so Christ gives the church His new name.
Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.
It is important to know that the first covenant was with the nation of Israel and they were sometimes called, the chosen ones, people of God and even referred to as a wife, with God being the husband. This is of course pre-Christ. Since Christ has come, there is a new covenant. Believers of Jesus Christ were originally called, ekklesia (meaning ones who are called out), also called the church, the body of Christ and sometimes referred to as the bride of Christ. So in the Old Testament, God’s people were like a wife and in the New Testament, as a bride.
Isaiah 54:5-8 “For your husband is your Maker—the LORD of Hosts is His name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth. For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, like the rejected wife of one’s youth,” says your God. “For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will bring you back in a surge of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD your Redeemer.
The covenant between Israel and the Lord, is seen in the following verses.
Exodus 24:7-8 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has said we will do, and be obedient.” And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you according to all these words.”
Ezekiel 16:8 Then I passed by and saw you, and you were indeed old enough for love. So I spread My cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I pledged Myself to you, entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine, declares the Lord GOD.
At times, Israel would be the faithful and unfaithful wife. By the time of Hosea, she had become extremely unfaithful. In Hosea 2:14-18, we can see she is prophesied of to be given a special time of redemption with the Lord in the Millennium.

While we do believe in a mid tribulation rapture, we are not saying we know the day or the hour. The Lord makes it very clear that no one but the Father knows that. While we do believe it is at or near the middle of the last 7 years of this Age, the Lord says that He has to cut the time short for the elect's sake in Matthew 24:22 and who knows the amount of time that will be?
